Dana Dimel, a cherished figure in college football, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 62. His family confirmed that he died peacefully in his sleep. Dimel was currently serving as a senior offensive assistant for the Illinois Fighting Illini, under head coach Bret Bielema.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Dimel had an illustrious career that spanned over three decades, both as a player and a coach. He was an All-America offensive tackle at Kansas State University, forging his path in the sport he loved.

Dimel’s coaching journey began as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 1989. He quickly established himself as a capable coach under the mentorship of legendary coach Bill Snyder. Throughout his time at Kansas State, he held various roles, eventually becoming the offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2017, during a period that saw the Wildcats achieve eight consecutive bowl appearances.
His head coaching career started at Wyoming from 1997 to 1999, where he recorded a respectable 22-13 record. He then moved to Houston (2000-2002) before taking the helm at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) from 2018 to 2023. While at UTEP, he achieved a notable milestone by leading the Miners to a 7-6 record and a bowl appearance in 2021, despite an overall record of 20-49 over his six seasons there.
