Devastating Fire Destroys Historic Elnathan Hall at Knoxville College

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - On the evening of Monday, a fierce blaze engulfed Elnathan Hall, an administrative building at Knoxville College, causing irreparable damage to the structure which was over 126 years old. The Knoxville Fire Department (KFD) received reports of the fire shortly before 8:00 PM, noting "heavy fire is showing on arrival of the first KFD units".

The fire department initially executed a defensive operation, deploying master streams to battle the flames, but unfortunately, the building now stands as a total loss.

Founded in 1875, Knoxville College is a historically Black College or University (HBCU) that faced numerous challenges over the decades, including loss of accreditation in 1997 and declining enrollment rates. The college has been largely closed since May 2015 after struggling financially, with only 11 students enrolled at the time of closure.
